Tshwane rolls out comprehensive health assessments
The upcoming outreach in The Orchards marks the beginning of a seven-week campaign across all seven regions of Tshwane.
Residents in the north of Pretoria will be the first to undergo health evaluations for HIV, tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted infections (STIs), substance abuse, and non-communicable diseases.
Tshwane metro is poised to significantly impact local health by launching a comprehensive health outreach programme starting August 8.
The upcoming outreach begins in The Orchards and marks the beginning of a seven-week campaign across all seven regions of Tshwane.
This initiative, set to begin in Ward 110 in Region 1, is designed to bring essential health services directly to the community, reinforcing the city’s commitment to accessible and proactive healthcare.
According to MMC for Health Rina Marx: “The programme aims to address a wide range of health concerns. It also seeks to enhance public awareness about various health issues and promote preventative care.”
Marx said the health outreach in The Orchards will feature an array of services:
– HIV Counselling and Testing: Residents will have access to HIV counselling, testing, treatment literacy, and antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation and re-initiation.
– Non-communicable Disease Screening: Screening for conditions such as high blood sugar and blood pressure, along with immunisation and vaccination services.
– STI Awareness: Education and screening for sexually transmitted infections to prevent and manage these conditions effectively.
– TB Screening and Awareness: Information and screening for tuberculosis to improve early detection and treatment.
– Substance Use Awareness: Screening and referrals related to substance use, with guidance and support provided.
– Health Programme Awareness: Information on various health programmes offered by Tshwane.
She said the programme is a collaborative effort involving the metro’s Health Department’s Multisectoral AIDS Management Unit, Community Oriented Substance Use Programme (COSUP), and health promotion teams.
“The initiative will be supported by key partners such as the Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI), #keready, Mpathy Clinic, and ImpiloRAD.
“The newly elected Tshwane Civil Society Forum will also contribute, playing a vital role in aligning with the National Strategic Plan for HIV, TB, and STIs 2023–2028.”
The MMC mentioned that by bringing these services directly to communities, the metro aims to bridge gaps in healthcare access, promote early intervention, and ensure that all residents can benefit from essential health services.
