Mams trio arrested for imitating police officers, attempted hijacking
Three occupants of a silver Toyota Corolla with a blue light on the dashboard were arrested after threatening another motorist with a firearm on the N14.
Three male suspects from Mamelodi are expected to make their second court appearance on August 14 following their arrest in North West for crimes relating to attempted hijacking, pretending to be police officers and unlawful possession of a firearm.
The trio was nabbed on August 4 and held in custody upon their appearance in the Ventersdorp Magistrate’s Court on August 6.
Police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh said: “The accused; Raymond Malefo (44), Jim Masingi (47) and Patrick Masemola (63) who are all from Mamelodi, are facing charges of attempted hijacking, pretending to be police officers and unlawful possession of a firearm.
Myburgh said the suspects were arrested on Sunday morning, along the N14 road near Ventersdorp.
“It is alleged that a motorist was driving along the N14 when the driver of a silver Toyota Corolla with a blue light on the dashboard attempted to stop him.”
The motorist was threatened with a gun but did not stop. “Shortly after the incident, he saw traffic officers and reported the incident to them.”
She said the traffic officers stopped the Toyota Corolla and the trio was apprehended and handed over to the police.
“Investigations into the matter are underway and we cannot rule out the possibility of linking the suspects with similar crimes previously committed in the area.”
North West provincial commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded the officers for their swift response that led to the arrest.
