Pretoria’s talent takes home top Afri Indies awards

Franco Prinsloo and The Vox Chamber Choir was the overall winner of the evening, bagging R20 000 for “Aeternum”.

Artists from across South Africa came together for an unforgettable and glamorous evening at the Afri-Indie Music Awards 2024 to celebrate and honour the best in the independent industry.

Apart from honouring the hard work and talent that the independent music world has to offer, the evening included brilliant performances from big names.

Centurions Rayne gave an energetic performance complete with choreographed dancers, while David Fourie got down into the audience to get the attendees at the AfriForum Theatre up and dancing.

Mirandi blew the room away with her perfect voice showing why she deserved her Die Kontrak win, before Karin Hougaard, who had travelled all the way from the USA, was the highlight of the evening.

Hougaard spoke about the importance of working together to uplift the industry while inspiring many in the room to get their bare feet on the ground as she spread her infectious enthusiasm.

She was also recognised with a lifetime achievement award for her contributions to the industry, along with David Kramer and Johan Stemmet.

Rozalla was recognised for her 35-year-long contribution with the international award, while other contributions recognised included Dozi for 35 years, Ignaz Streicher for 23, and Gerhard Steyn for 22.

The awards also recognised the important work in reviving Afrikaans music of Jan Bloukaas, who is currently battling brain cancer.

Pretoria’s artists were not left behind.

Franco Prinsloo and The Vox Chamber Choir was the overall winner of the evening, bagging R20 000 for “Aeternum”.

“These awards are an overwhelming honour,” said Prinsloo.

“It’s fantastic that the Afri-Indie Independent Artist Awards also honour classical music. And it’s an unexpected honour for a classical music album to win the Best Overall Artist award.

“A big thank you to the panel for this great honour!”

The love for the classics didn’t end with the top prize, as Chris Vale, Eugene Joubert and Franco Prinsloo also took home the best classic album for Come to Dust and the best classic single for “Shall I compare thee (Sonnet 18)”.

“It is a great honour for me to receive these two awards for my first complete classical album. You work so hard to make the best and most beautiful recordings, and these awards make the whole process worth it!” Chris Vale said.

Woman Artist of the Year went to another familiar face, Jennifer Zamudio.
