More than 300 suspects arrested in Sunnyside, counterfeit goods confiscated
Police seized over R250 000 worth of counterfeit goods during business inspections.
Tshwane Police and partnering organisations arrested 335 suspects recently during crime prevention operations in Sunnyside.
Under the leadership of Tshwane district commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, one operation took place on October 17.
“This highly successful operation, which involved the participation of multiple law enforcement agencies and community organisations, aimed to target unlicensed firearms, trace wanted suspects, and conduct compliance inspections at liquor establishments,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk.
Tshwane detectives arrested 309 suspects for serious offences, including 95 for gender-based violence (GBV), one for murder, four for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and five for rape.
“As part of the operation, 820 individuals were inspected and 485 vehicles were checked. A total of 15 targeted premises were searched. During these searches, one suspect was arrested for drug possession and dealing when 46 bags of drugs were found in his possession,” Van Dyk said.
Several business premises selling cellphone accessories were inspected, leading to the confiscation of 250 counterfeit items worth R260 000.
Van Dyk said the Department of Health visited eight shops, closed two and issued fines amounting to R25 000 to the other six for non-compliance with health regulations.
He said 233 fines totalling R100 600 were issued.
