Metro urges residents to be vigilant as possible thunderstorms loom
Residents are cautioned to be alert and safe as the severe thunderstorms could lead to localised flooding
South African Weather Services (SAWS) has issued a Yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms in Tshwane this afternoon.
According to Lehlohonolo Thobela, a weather forecaster at SAWS, scatted showers and thundershowers on Sunday afternoon are expected.
“Most of these thunderstorms are expected to be severe, which may lead to localised flooding due to heavy downpours and damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles, livelihood, and livestock.”
Thobela said the stormy weather conditions are expected to affect Tshwane on Monday.
“We expect thunder showers over the northern part of Gauteng, which covers Pretoria, however, it will be a widespread chance.”
He said that on Tuesday we can expect mainly isolated showers over the extreme northern parts, and that on Wednesday residents will experience warmer conditions.
The Tshwane Emergency Services cautioned residents to remain alert as there is a Yellow level 2 warning issued.
Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Mnguniis said the warning was issued by the South African Weather Service on Saturday, October 19.
The impact of severe thunderstorms may include the following:
* Localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads.
* Minor to major vehicle accidents due to poor driving visibility and slippery road conditions.
* Service disruptions due to power failures.
We call on communities to observe the following safety measures:
* If possible, stay indoors and away from metal objects.
* Do not seek shelter under trees or tall objects.
* Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges and swollen streams.
* Be aware that any combination of hail, strong winds, heavy rain and excessive lightning can accompany storms.
“Residents are encouraged to monitor the warnings and alerts issued by the South African Weather Service and other credible sources, and to immediately follow the recommended safety tips.”
Mnguni further called on residents to be vigilant and to immediately report any fire or rescue incident on 107 toll-free or alternatively calling 012 358 6300/6400.
