Call for action against ‘corruption’ at Menlo Park refuse dump
Residents reported that they were either turned away or money was demanded to use the site.

The metro has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into the claims of illegal solicitation of money from residents and the denial of access to the Menlo Park Garden Refuse Site.
Recently residents reported that they were turned away from the site, or money was demanded for access even though they carried less than a ton of waste.
They also reported that the staff was rude and aggressive.
According to Ward 82 Siobhan Muller, two residents have come forward to complain about alleged corruption at the site.
She said a resident had sent his gardener to go dump garden waste at the site but money was demanded and they were turned back.
“We then went to the site with the gardener to investigate and to identify the person who became furious and aggressive.”
Muller said according to municipal laws, the user needs a permit to dump waste above a ton so “this was just an abuse of power”.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said disposal of garden refuse at the site is currently free of charge.
“However vehicles carrying a capacity of more than 1 ton are required to have a waste transportation permit.”
He said access is denied to clients with a vehicle with a carrying capacity of more than 1 ton and without a waste transportation permit.
Mashigo said waste disposal at garden refuse sites is free at the moment so demanding cash is unacceptable behaviour.
“Workers involved in charging clients for waste will face disciplinary measures if reported with evidence.”
He said municipal policy process must be followed regarding discipline with the most severe being the dismissal of anyone found guilty of corruption.
“There is a notice board on-site that has information about the site and its operating times. The board also has information on how to register a complaint.”
Mashigo said garden refuse sites are meant to help residents dispose of their garden refuse.
“The city always strives to ensure improved delivery of services.”
