Tshwane overwhelmed by power outages after damaging storm
The metro has dispatched technicians to various locations to manage and rectify the outages and restore services.
The Tshwane metro has mobilised its technicians to address the power outage and restore service to areas affected by a series of severe thunderstorms that wreaked havoc across the Tshwane metro recently.
Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the storm, which uprooted trees and downed branches, has impacted the power supply, leading to multiple blackouts in various regions.
“The inclement weather caused damage to infrastructure, including overhead power lines, which were compromised by fallen trees and debris.
The metro has dispatched technicians to various locations to manage and rectify the outages.”
Mashigo said however the sheer scale of the problem and footprint of the outages had overwhelmed the restoration efforts and led to a service backlog.
“We have noted that technicians face challenges working in wet conditions, as safety protocols prohibit them from operating on the network during rainfall.
“This precautionary measure is essential to ensure the safety of the workers as they strive to restore supply to residents.
MMC for Human Settlements Aaron Maluleka is actively assessing the storm’s impact on the community.
Maluleka is scheduled to visit the affected area, particularly Soshanguve, where many homes were damaged by the strong winds, including ripping off roofs.
“Our administration is committed to supporting those affected, and we are co-ordinating efforts to restore service and provide relief to our residents,” said Maluleka.
Mashigo urged residents to protect themselves during this time and report any emergency to local authorities for a swift response.
“We understand the challenges our residents are facing and are doing everything possible to reduce the backlog and restore power as quickly as we can.”
