‘Impostor pretending to be Tshwane CFO’
A series of fake tender emails were sent to the service provider on October 18.
Tshwane has warned the public about a scam in which an impostor claims to be municipal CFO, Gareth Mnisi.
Metro spokesperson Selby Bokaba said the fraudster, who falsely identified himself as “Trevor Mnisi,” sent a series of emails to a service provider on October 18 in which he asked for urgent communication regarding tenders.
The email states: “Kindly inform the director to contact me ASAP on 073 034 5859 regarding tender no: EAM01-2024-25 for the supply, delivery, and off-loading of refuse bags on and when required basis for a period of three years.”
The impersonator sent another email concerning a different tender saying, “Kindly inform the director to contact me ASAP on 073 034 5859 regarding tender no: HHS01-2024-25 Tender for sewer line connection to connect 1 051 reticulated stands at Mamelodi X6 Phomolong.”
Bokaba urged residents and businesses to be aware of the emails.
“It is clear that these emails are fraudulent and poorly written,” said Bokaba.
“These emails are patently manufactured, penned by a clumsy fraudster and impersonator, and should be disregarded.”
He urged the general public not to fall for such requests via email or otherwise.
Bokaba said metro tenders are advertised in various newspapers.
“The metro will be registering a case docket with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and asking them to escalate the matter to the DPCI (Hawks),” he said.
He added that the metro hopes that the fraudster will be arrested and prosecuted for “attempting to commit a crime using the name of our CFO”.
