Cataract surgery marathon brings hope and healing to over 80 patients
Tshwane District Hospital Services embarked on a cataract surgical marathon to restore patients’ vision.
More than 80 people aged between 50 and 97 have regained their vision this month.
This was in honour of Eye Care Awareness Month, as Tshwane District Hospital Services (TDHS) recently embarked on a cataract surgical marathon to restore the vision of patients who couldn’t see properly.
Eye Care Awareness Month is observed annually to raise awareness about the importance of eye health, specifically focusing on the prevention and treatment of avoidable blindness.
Hygiene packs, walking sticks, blankets and beanies were also donated as part of the outreach programme.
TDHS successfully restored the vision of 83 people between October 7-17.
In a statement, it said a cataract extraction (surgery) is a quick and painless operation to remove a cloudy lens causing visual impairment and replace it with an artificial one.
“Through these procedures, the Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) has been able to restore dignity to thousands of patients whose day-to-day activities such as seeing the sunrise or reading a book had been impacted by their medical condition,” it said,
Beneficiary Adam Mokoena (51) from Soshanguve had the vision in his left eye restored during his cataract extraction.
It was Mokoena’s second procedure at the hospital as he had his left eye vision restored first a few months ago, enabling him to see properly and to read without much struggle.
“I was having a problem with my eyesight so I decided to come to the hospital for help. I was told it was a cataract issue and since then the service I’ve received has been good. I can see through my left eye now, and my vision is fine. I couldn’t read before, I couldn’t even make out letters on a page because I couldn’t see too far,” Mokoena said.
He thanked all the doctors and hospital staff who supported him during his procedures and recovery.
