Parts of Moreleta Park without power after cable theft in wee hours
Three feeder cables from Mooikloof Substation were stolen around 02:00 on Wednesday.
Parts of Moreleta Park in the east of Pretoria are without power due to cable theft incidents in the early hours of Wednesday morning.
Ward 91 councillor Henning Viljoen said three feeder cables from Mooikloof Substation were stolen.
“This has caused parts of the area supplied by the Mooikloof substation to be off.”
Viljoen said the cable theft incident happened around 02:00 on Wednesday.
“I kindly request patience as the teams are working to resolve this issue,” said Viljoen.
He said residents affected could expect at least a 24-hour outage before power is restored.
The ongoing illegal electricity connections, cable theft and vandalism have cost the metro over million in less than a year in repairs and disruption to service delivery.
Losses have increased from the estimated R470-million in the 2022/2023 fiscal year to over R800-million in the 2023/2024 financial year.
Tshwane Metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the city has opted for a zero tolerance to cable theft.
He said there is a dedicated metro police unit that deals with cable theft and vandalism. Arrests are being made as and when the tampering/theft are discovered, and criminal cases are being opened.
