Students come up with innovative solutions to solve Hackathon brainteasers

Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya found that the 123 competitors, who had 48 hours to work in teams to brainstorm their challenges, came up with some solid solutions.

Over 100 students from different universities recently took part in the Tshwane University of Technology’s (TUT) 2024 Hackathon.

The sixth Hackathon was hosted by TUT’s Faculty of Information and Communication Technology in partnership with the Tshwane metro from October 18-20. This is the third year that the metro has partnered with TUT for this challenge.

Out of 646 applicants, only 123 were selected to participate in this year’s edition. Contestants were given 48 hours to work in teams and brainstorm, design and develop their innovative solutions.

They were divided into groups of five to eight and were given the weekend to solve the challenges.

Mentorship by experienced professionals, including software developers, engineers and entrepreneurs provided guidance and support throughout the event.

TUT, the University of Pretoria, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and Unisa were among the competitors.
This year, the problem given to students was how the City’s Community and Social Development Services Department could best advertise its tourism centres.

The event will culminate in a series of presentations, where teams will pitch their projects to a panel of judges comprising industry experts, academics and investors.

The top three teams will receive prizes and the opportunity to further develop their projects with support from TUT’s Innovation Hub.

Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya attended the October 18 session and gave an address to participating students.

“With only a few hours to solve the challenges, I was impressed with the solid solutions that the groups presented. The final winners will present their solutions at an award ceremony to be held at Tshwane House on November 1,” she said.
