Police nab over 300 suspects in east weekend operation
Officials inspected 783 individuals and 309 vehicles, with 51 vehicles being subjected to thorough verification to determine if they had been reported stolen.
This weekend, Operation Shanela resulted in the arrest of 361 suspects in Silverton and Kameeldrift.
Led by Tshwane police district commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine, the operation took place in partnership with various stakeholders.
According to police spokesperson Johan Van Dyk, the arrests were for a range of offences.
He said the operation traced wanted suspects and ensured compliance with liquor licensing regulations.
In the first phase of the operation, officers arrested 262 suspects for serious offences, including 69 for gender-based violence, seven for murder, one for attempted murder, seven for armed robbery, and six for rape.
“Furthermore, 61 undocumented individuals were detained, pending legal proceedings,” said Van Dyk.
“Should they be found in violation of immigration laws, deportation procedures will be initiated.”
Van Dyk said 37 people were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, with another person arrested for drinking in public and resisting arrest.
“Additionally, 35 identified premises were searched,” he said.

He said 31 Aarto infringement notices were issued totalling R25 750.
Compliance inspections of 16 liquor establishments were also conducted, resulting in four being shut down for non-compliance with the Liquor Act.
“A total of 121 127 millilitres of liquor was confiscated,” said Van Dyk.
Thine has expressed his sincere gratitude to all stakeholders involved, emphasising the importance of collaboration in ensuring community safety and upholding the rule of law.
