TMPD on high alert ahead of festive season

The TMPD has revealed its safety plans to ensure residents stay safe during the December holidays.

As the festive season approaches, the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) is ramping up its efforts to curb crime and reduce road carnage associated with illegal activities, particularly drunk driving.

Spokesperson Isaac Mahamba urged residents to refrain from engaging in unlawful behaviour to ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday period.

He said people’s behaviour significantly contributes to road accidents, as drunk driving has been identified as a major cause.

“The TMPD made 75 arrests for drunk driving during September and October.”

Mahamba said all hands are on deck to ensure residents comply with the rules of the road during the holidays.

He urged motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“Seek alternative means of transport to protect both yourself and other road users.”

Mahamba also cautioned pedestrians to avoid being on the streets while intoxicated.

The TMPD plans to intensify its surveillance at recreational areas, including public parks and popular drinking spots to prevent lawlessness and related criminal activities.

“We want to send a strong message that any person found contravening road traffic regulations will face the full might of the law,” said Mahamba.

He added that the TMPD aims to mitigate the loss of life caused by reckless behaviour on the roads during the festive season.

Mahamba said by enforcing regulations, the department aims to create a safer environment for all residents.

TMPD chief Commissioner Yolande Faro called on the public to abide with the law and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to ensure everyone has a safe festive season.
