Police nab three suspected car thieves in Centurion
The three suspects were arrested after a speed chase in the streets of Lyttelton.
Police and various security companies arrested three suspected car thieves in Lyttelton, on Wednesday.
Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said the suspects were apprehended following a speed chase that ensued after they attempted to evade law enforcement in a white Ford Puma.
“Police received a tip-off regarding identified suspects in a vehicle theft in the Tshwane area.”
Van Dyk said police closely monitored the suspects’ movements in Muckleneuk with the help of several security companies.
He said a tactical takedown was set in motion, but the suspects managed to evade the tactical teams, leading to a chase in the streets of Lyttelton.
“The team successfully intercepted the vehicle in Lyttelton and apprehended the suspects.
During the preliminary investigation at the scene, police officers discovered that the Ford Puma was fitted with false plates,” he said.
Van Dyk said a subsequent search of the vehicle revealed a cache of car-breaking equipment, various vehicle computer boxes and a jamming device.
“Further investigations are underway to determine if the suspects can be linked to other vehicle theft cases, particularly in Brooklyn, Lyttelton, Garsfontein and Sunnyside,” he added.
Major-General Samuel Thine commended the effort of all parties involved in combatting crime in Tshwane.
