Primary school principal under fire from the SGB

The principal is accused of using her position to further personal interests over that of the SGB.

The School Governing Body (SGB) of Laerskool Beyers in Danville has called for the removal of the principal following misconduct allegations.

The SGB claims that Rubia Nuruddin is using her position to suppress them when it comes to decision-making at the school, among other claims.

In a report sent to the Department of Basic Education (DBE), the SGB details complaints since March concluding that Nuruddin must be suspended while the claims are being investigated.

“The principal sells school tracksuits at the school without SGB approval and from an unapproved supplier as well,” the report read.

“On June 7, an SGB member noticed workers painting the school. The member emailed the rest of the governing body the following day and the treasurer mentioned that the company used for the painting was not approved by the SGB. The treasurer suggested that the work cease to avoid unauthorised payments.”

Other SGB allegations are:

– Spending allocated school funds on personal expenses and not accounting for them.

– Refusing to compile spending reports.

– Using suppliers to conduct maintenance such as electric work and painting without consulting the SGB.

– Refusing to be part of a WhatsApp group where she wouldn’t be permitted to be its admin.

– The tuck shop is not being used for fundraising at the school.

– Replacing staff members without consulting the SGB.

– Attempting to have close colleagues take over positions in the SGB.

– Refusing to meet with the SGB on multiple occasions or proceeding with meetings without enough members in attendance, among others.

Rekord reached out to Nuruddin over the allegations and was referred to the response made by the DBE.

The DBE had the following to say when asked about the allegations:

“The Gauteng Department of Education is aware and concerned about the allegations of mismanagement of funds levelled against the principal at Laerskool Generaal Beyers and views such allegations in a serious light and as such, investigations are at an advanced stage and the outcome thereof will determine the action to be taken. The department is committed to clean governance, transparency, and oversight and we deal with any threats that will impact negatively on service delivery and the provision of quality education to all learners in Gauteng,” said DBE spokesperson, Steve Mabona.
