Massive heatwave to hit Pretoria as temperatures rise to 38°C
Pretoria is bracing for an intense heatwave this weekend, with temperatures expected to rise to 38°C
Pretoria is set to experience scorching temperatures as a heatwave hits the capital from Saturday, November 2 to Monday, November 4, with forecasts predicting a high of up to 38°C.
The South African Weather Service issued an alert for heatwave temperatures with Saturday having a low of 17°C and a high of 36°C.
The city will experience high temperatures of 38°C and low temperatures of 20°C, with no precipitation predicted on Sunday and Monday.
The Tshwane Emergency Services Department spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said all residents should be aware of the adverse effects that may be caused by extended exposure to extreme heat weather conditions.
Mnguni said the effects may include dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
He said the following precautionary measures should be taken:
-Staying hydrated by drinking copious amounts of water
-Limiting outdoor activities (especially during the hottest time of the day)
-Wearing loose clothing and avoiding dark-coloured clothing where possible
-Remaining in the shade where possible
-Keeping an eye on vulnerable individuals
-Ensuring that children or animals are not left in parked vehicles
-Avoiding strenuous physical activity if possible
“Residents are also encouraged to monitor warnings and alerts issued by the South African Weather Service and other government agencies and to immediately follow recommended safety tips.
“We further call on residents to be vigilant and immediately report any fire or rescue incident by calling 107 toll-free or alternatively calling 012 358 6300/6400. For ambulance services, call 112 toll-free.”
“When reporting an emergency, please remain calm, speak clearly, know where you are, give the correct address and give your correct contact number to allow the operator to phone you back should they require doing so.”
