More than temperatures rise as SAAF Museum hosts Flying Day
The Flying Day show has been running for the past 30 years and helps to raise funds in restoring classic aircraft to their former glory.
Not only did temperatures soar this past weekend but aircraft also took to the skies as the South African Air Force (SAAF) Museum hosted its monthly Flying Day on November 2.
Residents gathered at the Swartkop Airforce Base for a fun day out and to watch these planes in action.
Deon Ferdinand Coetzee is one of the directors of the Buccaneer Restoration Fund. He says that for the past 30 years, the Flying Day has assisted projects such as his in raising funds to restore some classic aircraft to their former glory every first Saturday of the month.
“It’s part of heritage and we try to preserve them.
“This aircraft for example was built in 1950, and decommissioned in 1992. So it’s been parked here for 30 years and just like it, we think that we can keep going for another 30 years so the younger generation can see and enjoy them,” he said.
Coetzee said after finishing the current plane they are working on, they only intend to continue.
One of the vital functions of the museum is aviation research and the sharing of information related to the history and traditions of the SAAF.
Families can visit the museum during the festive season to fully appreciate the richness of the country’s military and aviation history.
The museum is open Mondays to Fridays from 09:00-15:00 and Saturdays from 08:30-13:00.
