Ouma Isie hosts farmer’s market
The market supports small entrepreneurs amid tough economy and rising costs.

Centurion residents were treated to the most recent instalment of the Ouma Isie’s Farm-to-Table Market in Irene this past weekend.
The farmer’s market was the brainchild of Ouma’s Tea Garden owner, Thinus Olivier who says that the inspiration was to support small business owners in the community.

“Everything is tough now, the economy is tight and it bites. Everything is up but it is also a nice way for people to get out because it’s an affordable family day for people,” Olivier says.
This weekend’s market took place on November 2 at the Smuts House Museum in Irene, Centurion where attendees could browse through 36 different stalls.

Olivier says that the market has been running for the past five months and encourages residents to stop by every last Saturday of the month to partake in the festivities.

“I think it’s time for people to support small entrepreneurs, people who are just trying to feed their families or grow their brand into more established businesses because that is how we grow the economy. Maybe this vendor can be here for a season and then a bigger store comes as a result of her time here, that would be a great thing to see. Growing businesses, employing one another, that is how we grow the economy at the end of the day,” he says.
