Severe thunderstorms with flooding predicted for Tshwane
Residents are warned of potential flooding, possible accidents and power failures as Yellow Level 2 alert is issued for Wednesday afternoon
A level 2 warning has been issued for severe thunderstorms with flooding for Wednesday afternoon in Pretoria
The Tshwane Emergency Services Department has issued a warning to communities following a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms on November 6.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued the warning, cautioning residents of potential localised flooding, minor to major vehicle accidents and power failures.
SAWS forecaster, Samkeliwe Tshwala, said: “On Wednesday afternoon, there’s a 60% chance of showers and a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms, with possibilities of localised flooding and disrupted major travel routes.”
Tshwala said that on Thursday, partly cloudy skies are expected in the morning, with a 30% chances of isolated thunder showers late in the afternoon.
She added that Friday is expected to be partly cloudy with possible morning showers.
According to Tshwane ESD spokesperson, Lindsay Mguni, the impact of severe thunderstorms may include the following:
• Localised flooding of susceptible low-lying areas, informal settlements and susceptible roads.
• Minor to major vehicle accidents due to poor driving visibility and slippery road conditions.
• Localised service disruptions due to power failures.
Mnguni urged locals to stay away from metal objects, not to seek shelter under trees or tall objects and if possible, to stay indoors.
“Avoid crossing flooded low-lying roads, bridges, and swollen streams.”
He added that residents should be aware that any combination of hail, strong wind, heavy rain and/or excessive lightning can accompany storms.
Residents are encouraged to monitor the warnings and alerts issued by SAWS and other credible sources, and to immediately follow the recommended safety tips.
“We further call on residents to be vigilant and to immediately report any fire or rescue incident on 107 toll-free or alternatively, call 012 358 6300/6400.”
