Bus driver airlifted to hospital, 6 others injured in R80 accident

The R80 Highway was closed in both directions from around 08:00.

A devastating crash involving a bus and a light motor vehicle on the R80 highway northbound before Rosslyn Road left scores of people injured on Wednesday morning, November 6.

Tshwane Metro Police (TMPD) closed the R80 in both directions and directed traffic to alternative routes from around 08:00 to about 12:00, according to the Tshwane Emergency Services (EMS).

Medical services had to rush patients to several emergency facilities with injuries ranging from minor to critical.

Emergency services said two with severe injuries and three patients with minor injuries were transported to Netcare Akasia hospital, one severely injured patient was transported to Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

The critically injured bus driver was airlifted by Netcare Air Ambulance to Netcare Milpark Hospital.

Gauteng Emergency Services spokesperson Anniki Lelaka said seven patients had suffered injuries and one was airlifted to hospital.

“The rest of the people on the bus took a new bus to their destination,” said Lelaka.

EMS spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni said EMS emergency centre received a report of a bus accident near the N4 interchange in Pretoria North around 08:40.

“The centre immediately dispatched firefighting resources from Rosslyn Fire Station to the scene,” said Mnguni.

He said when EMS personnel arrived on the scene, the bus driver and another three patients were on the bus while four, including the driver, were in the other vehicle

Mnguni said the patients were first treated on the scene before being “transported to different hospitals by private ambulances”.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
