Mamelodi learners get guidance on different career paths

Lompec Secondary School learners benefited from career guidance presentations held by Thandanani Drop Inn Centre in partnersihp with the University of Pretoria on Monday.

Lompec Secondary School learners were exposed to a range of career opportunities on Monday.

Thandanani Drop Inn Centre partnered with the University of Pretoria (UP) to hold career guidance presentations at local schools.

Kate Kekana from the centre said the partnership aims to expose learners around Mamelodi to different career choices.

She said learners need to know which careers would become extinct and which ones would continue to exist.

“Schoolchildren also need to know about various professions that will emerge as a result of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and what the University of Pretoria can offer them in career choices,” said Kekana.

“Most township learners don’t know which career they should follow in the future.

“Since we are an organisation dealing mostly with social issues, drug addicts, the homeless, aftercare, and counselling, our partnership with UP allows us to accommodate students to do their practicals at the centre, depending on what they are studying for.

“The career guidance presentation will give them the much-needed information to make correct career choices,” she said.

The presentation aimed to help learners decide which subjects to study to help them follow their respective careers.

Olivia Makwakwa, a theology student from the university, said she was there to encourage Mamelodi learners to further their studies.

She said the presentation aimed to help learners make career choices and which subjects to study at school to help them follow their careers.

“Our visit does not end today. We have a partnership with Thandanani Drop Inn Center to help learners who want to apply for bursaries or need help in applying to study at the university.”

Makwakwa said the expo would guide learners into making the right decisions when it comes to career choices.
