Dog breeder explains cruelty of dog fights
Chris Mabe is running awareness campaigns in Mamelodi to prevent the spread of serious dog diseases and stop cruelty to animals.
A veteran dog breeder from Mamelodi is encouraging residents not to promote dogfighting because of its cruelty to animals.
Chris Mabe, the well-known dog breeder at Chris Pets for the Love of Pets, was addressing residents, especially children who want to be dog owners, during the Free Rabies Vaccination and Dog Awareness Day.
The awareness campaign was held at the Chris Mabe clinic in Mamelodi East Section 14 on Saturday.
Mabe said the dog awareness campaign in Mamelodi was aimed at helping prevent the spread of serious dog diseases.
A total of 172 dogs received free rabies vaccinations.
Mabe raised his concern, as some of the dogs were treated for wounds that came from dog fights.
He said he wanted to appeal to people to start loving their dogs.
He added dogs were not as dangerous as some people believe. “Dogs deserve our care and love,” he said.
Most of the dog owners were small children, and part of the awareness campaign was an education programme in which owners were taught how to take care of dogs, and that dogfighting means cruelty to animals.
Mabe said he was touched by the owners’ love for their dogs as some walked their dogs through the streets.
He said it was not the first time Chris Pets hosted an event of this nature in Mamelodi.
“The free rabies vaccination will continue at Chris Pets Clinic in Mamelodi until the end of December,” he said.
“My aim is to present awareness campaigns throughout the entire Tshwane community to raise awareness on dog diseases and how to care for and love dogs,” he said.
He said he is planning to operate the Chris Mabe clinic on a full-time basis for dog and cat owners in Mamelodi, whereby pets will receive primary healthcare at a reasonable price.
