Truck on fire, three injured in N1 accidents

The driver stopped in the emergency lane and uncoupled the truck from the trailer when he noticed fire at the back.

Two people were injured and one other person later transported to Jubilee District Hospital in an accident on the N1 Highway northbound near Wallmansthal on Tuesday morning.

Tshwane emergency services (EMS) dispatched firefighting resources from Wonderboom, Innesdale, and Temba fire stations to the scene of a truck that had caught alight.

EMS spokesperson Lindsey Mguni said the incident was reported around 03:57.

Mguni said when the firefighters got to the scene, the rear section of the trailer was engulfed in flames.

He said the driver had separated the truck from the trailer before he called for assistance.

“The truck was successfully extinguished by 05:59,” said Mnguni.

He said the truck was carrying foodstuffs and beverages.

Mnguni said a secondary accident occurred near the scene when another truck and two bakkies collided.

Gauteng Emergency Medical Services (Gems) treated three people with minor injuries on the scene and then took one to Jubilee District Hospital.

“Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department and SAPS assisted with incident management,” he said, adding that the N1 Highway was temporarily closed due to safety concerns after the accident.

“The cause of the accident remains unknown.”

In the event of an emergency, residents are reminded to call 107 toll-free or 012 358 6300/6400.

“When reporting an incident, remain calm, provide clear information and know your location.”
