Police nab man with illegal firearm after tip-off
The suspect was caught with a 9mm firearm with a filed-off serial number.
A tip-off from an anonymous person has led to a a court date for a man following his arrest in Hammanskraal, Kanana.
The man, who was enjoying himself playing pool at a local tavern, was publicly displaying a firearm on November 13.
Police acting on the information, rushed to the scene where the man was nabbed for possession of an illegal firearm.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk, police officers received information regarding an unidentified man suspected of possessing an unlicensed firearm while playing snooker at Sam’s Tavern in Kanana.
Van Dyk said officers swiftly proceeded to the address, conducting surveillance to verify the information and identify the suspect upon receiving a description.
“When the suspect was located and approached, he attempted to flee.
“Officers gave chase and successfully apprehended him and a search of the suspect revealed a 9mm firearm with a filed-off serial number, along with five rounds of live ammunition concealed on his person,” said Van Dyk.
He said the suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm.
“The firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine if it has been involved in any other criminal activities.
“The suspect is set to appear in court soon,” he said.
