Tshwane working to resolve brown water in Hammanskraal

The metro previously warned residents about the possibility of non-potable water flowing through the distribution network and expected intermittent water supply.

Magalies Water and Tshwane metro say they are aware of images circulating on social media platforms concerning brown water distributed through taps in parts of Hammanskraal.

The metro and the water entity have disclosed that the brown water was due to network distribution built up during flushing.

Magalies Water spokesperson David Magae said the discoloration of the water is due to the natural sedimentation process that occurs in the pipeline network.

“In a media release issued on October 28, the public was cautioned of intermittent water supply and water which will flow in the network, which is not of potable (drinkable) standard in preparation for the formal commissioning of Module One of the Klipdrift Package Plant. The evident brown water in the distribution network is a result of the built-up and accumulation of sediment (brown sand) that has settled within the pipeline network.

“As part of our commitment to providing safe and high-quality water, we are currently undertaking a comprehensive flushing process to clear the system.

“The flushing procedure is essential following a period of stagnation in the water distribution system,” he said.

He said the routine maintenance helps remove impurities, stagnant water and sand that may have settled in the pipelines.

The flushing operation, which began on November 10, is expected to conclude on November 14, impacting several areas, including:

– Mandela Village

– Marokolong

– Ramotse

– Kekana Gardens (Steve Bikoville)

– Kudube Unit 9

– Babelegi Industrial area

– Bridgeview Informal Settlement

Residents are advised to let their taps run until the water clears and to store sufficient water in advance to mitigate any inconvenience during this flushing period.

“The safety of our consumers is our priority and we continuously monitor water quality through rigorous protocols and a risk-based approach that adheres to regulatory frameworks.

“We are committed to resolving these water quality challenges swiftly and effectively,” said Magae.

Residents are encouraged to report persistent water quality issues by contacting Magalies Water Customer Call Centre on 0860 000 720 or via WhatsApp on 083 744 3971.
