Damaged roof causes prolonged power outage at Tshwane bus depot
The lack of power allegedly since October 18, has caused an outcry from workers having to navigate a dark building making work .
Bus commuters have had a rather difficult time – as have workers at the Church Square bus depot.
The leaking roof at Tshwane Bus Service depot on Church Square in Pretoria Central has led to a prolonged power outage since October 18, the metro confirmed.
Workers at the site have been working under these circumstances without power for weeks causing a massive inconvenience, according to them.
In the last week of October and the first week of November, Tshwane was experiencing scorching temperatures as a heatwave of up to 38°C hit the capital.
Workers who chose to remain anonymous said they had to brace the heatwave and work at the office with non-functioning air conditioning systems due to a lack of electricity.
“The power outage at the depot affected the issuing of bus schedules and many commuters,” said the workers.
The workers said they tried to engage with their management about the situation however they were blatantly ignored.
“Is it even legal to make people work in a building with no power during a heatwave for weeks and at the same time no updates are being given to us, no solutions have been brought forward?” the workers wanted to know.
They alleged that the management is sitting comfortably at the municipal office unbothered as they have air cons and power.
The metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the building has no power.
“The roof is damaged and this leads to power trips when it rains however it will be attended to soon,” Mashigo said.
He said the city could not close the office as it would affect scores of commuters.
“In the interest of service delivery, the office was kept open.
In the interim, the TBS management will look into available short-term remedies that could be implemented,” said Mashigo.
Supply chain procurement processes are currently underway to appoint a service provider to repair the roof, he added.
He said all the issues will be solved soon.
