Police launch manhunt for kidnappers
The suspects kidnapped and robbed a 27-year-old victim and later abandoned her after extorting money.
Police are investigating a case of kidnapping and extortion involving a 27-year-old victim.
According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the incident occurred around 17:45 on November 11.
Van Dyk said the victim was returning from work and boarded a white Toyota Quantum at the corner of Garstfontein Road and Lois Avenue, Menlyn.
He added there there were three men in the vehicle.
“After the vehicle began moving, one of the suspects grabbed the victim and forced her to the floor,” said Van Dyk.
“While driving around, the victim received a phone call from her manager, which the suspects allowed her to answer on speakerphone, during which she informed her manager that she had been kidnapped.”
Van Dyk stated that the suspects then forced the victim to call a friend, who transferred R1 000, and another, who transferred R2 000.
He said the suspects accessed the victim’s banking application and withdrew R5 000.
“They also stole the victim’s Huawei cellphone and HP laptop, with a combined estimated value of R16 000,” said Van Dyk.
He said the victim was later abandoned in Mamelodi and subsequently reported the incident to Brooklyn police.
“Police are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that may lead to the arrest of the suspects.”
