R200k of counterfeit goods, including pharmaceutical products seized
Three suspects were arrested for dealing in illicit goods including pharmaceutical products, cellphone accessories, perfumes, toothbrushes and pens.
A multiple-stakeholder joint police operation recently seized over R200 000 worth of counterfeit goods in Pretoria Central.
Agencies involved included the Gauteng Counterfeit Unit, Vispol, Commercial Crime, brand protectors and the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAPHRA).
The operation took place on November 19 and resulted in the seizure of counterfeit and illicit goods worth R209 750.
“A total of 5 717 items were seized, including illicit pharmaceutical products, cellphone accessories, perfumes, toothbrushes and pens. Three suspects were arrested for dealing in illicit goods. The suspects will appear before the magistrate’s court soon,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko.
In another incident, a team comprising SAPS officers, crime prevention wardens and SAPHRA issued fines to four shop owners for dealing in illicit goods in Benoni. The team also seized illicit pharmaceutical products, counterfeit clothes and illicit cellphone accessories to an estimated value of R41 000.
“These operations are a significant blow to the trade of counterfeit and illicit goods in the province. We commend the teams involved for their hard work and dedication to keeping our communities safe,” Sibeko said.
