Emergency services warn of lithium battery hazard
A fire in Wapadrand security village has highlighted the importance of lithium battery safety.
A recent house fire at the Wapadrand Security Village has highlighted the importance of lithium battery safety.
The Tshwane Metro Emergency Services (EMS) responded to a house fire in the security village in Waparand at the weekend.
EMS spokesperson Lindsay Mguni said firefighters from Erasmuskloof, Silverton, and Central determined two lithium iron batteries had burst causing the fire in the garage.
He said heat generated blew up a gas cylinder.
“No one was injured in the incident,” said Mnguni.
He however urged locals to exercise extreme caution when dealing with lithium batteries.
Mnguni warned that lithium batteries can be extremely hazardous. He shared the following safety tips:
– Install lithium batteries in a safe and secure location, away from combustible materials.
– Never use water to extinguish a lithium battery fire, as this can cause the fire to spread.
– If a lithium battery is on fire, evacuate the area immediately and call the fire department.
– If you have a lithium battery that is on fire or malfunctioning, and it is safe to do so, carefully carry it outside using a carry pack.
– Exercise extreme caution and prioritise your safety above all else.
– Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the safe use and maintenance of lithium batteries.
