Tshwane EMS celebrates 35 newly appointed officers

The department had advertised 48 positions and only 35 officers have been appointed after many of the vacancies remained vacant for an extended period.

The Tshwane Emergency Services Department (EMS) recently held a significant ceremony to honour its newly appointed officers and welcome non-ranking officials who have achieved notable milestones in their careers.

Tshwane EMS spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said the event on November 21 was to congratulate the successful officers who had recently undergone an internal recruitment process.

He said the process was important as many of the vacancies had remained vacant for an extended period.

“These positions are critical for the incident management system, especially during emergency scenes.”

Mnguni said the department had only advertised 48 positions internally as it was confident in the existing internal capacity.

He said some newly appointed officers previously had been working without remuneration, due to the positions being unfunded and no acting allowance could be paid.

“While not all positions have been filled yet, 35 officers have been appointed, and they have already completed the Officers’ Induction Programme, which concluded on November 22,” he said.

Most of the newly appointed officers assumed their duties on November 1, while the remainder were set to start on December 1 and have already been assigned to their respective stations and regions.

Positions filled include 16 district commanders, 10 company commanders, three fire safety officers, two emergency planning officers and four disaster management officers.

Mnguni said each role is crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of emergency services in Tshwane.

Newly appointed officers were honoured and non-ranking officials were also congratulated for their achievements.
