Central police make explosive arrest
A 23-year-old man was arrested with multiple explosive samples at the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Struben streets on December 10.
Pretoria Central police recently arrested a 23-year-old man in possession of explosives during a stop-and-search in the CBD.
The suspect was apprehended at the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Struben streets on December 10 at around 17:00.
Gauteng traffic wardens and patrollers spotted the suspicious man with a backpack while on duty.
“While conducting a search they stumbled across detonation cords wrapped on the suspect’s waist and a number two detonator hidden inside his bag pack. According to the statement given, he stated that he was travelling from Benoni to Brits, and he was immediately arrested while awaiting the relevant role players,” said police spokesperson, Constable Thabang Nkhumise.
A backup unit was deployed by the crime prevention team as well as the explosive unit, and all other relevant role players were also summoned to the scene.
All the necessary work was done to safely remove the explosive unit for booking.
Pretoria Central station commander Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba welcomed the discovery and applauded the members for curbing the surge of crime in the inner city by all means.
Mashaba also assured residents that more officers would be deployed during the festive season to ensure every traveller was safe and secure.
The suspect is yet to appear at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
