Locals clean up Groenkloof streets
The project revamped three different streets in the area: George Storrar, Florence Ribeiro and Totius streets.
Groenkloof’s once-neglected pavements have been rid of ingrown weeds and repaved to beauty by locals.
The community-led initiative dubbed the Groenkloof Clean-up Project was launched in October 2023 and has renewed George Storrar, Florence Ribeiro, and Totius streets since its operations.
According to spokesperson Charlene Dreyer, the project began when local gardeners started cleaning pavements on scheduled Fridays for free.
She said the initiative gained momentum when it was announced on the Groenkloof Residents’ Association (GRA) WhatsApp group, and a resident sponsorship enabled its expansion.
Dreyer said Groenkloof residents allowed their gardeners to help clean the sidewalks.
The GRA has replaced stolen bricks on the island in George Storrar Street.
“Stolen bricks were replaced in George Storrar Street with the help of [ward councillor] Shaun Wilkinson and the Tshwane metro.”
Dreyer said they also take care of garbage bags and clean sidewalks.
She highlighted that previously unemployed Lucas Maposa is the reason for the success of the project, together with the financial contributions of the residents.
“He’s a hard-working self-starter, making a real contribution to the project’s success,” Dreyer said.
“Volunteers, including Dou Kleefstra, De Wet Louw, and James, have also played crucial roles.”
Kleefstra helps to spray weeds.
Dreyer urged locals to continue with donations, as they are essential for sustaining the project, funding necessary supplies, and equipment servicing and going towards Lucas’ wages.
“We appreciate the community’s financial support, which has made a real and lasting difference,” she said.
Wilkinson praised the community’s dedication.
“Their collaboration, community spirit and pride in our neighbourhood have truly transformed the area,” he said.
“This sets a powerful example of what can be achieved when a community unites behind a shared cause.”
He added that the clean-up project has enhanced the area’s beauty and cleanliness, fostering a shared sense of accomplishment and inspiration.
