Centurion singer hopes to brings joy with new version of Christmas classic

This Afrikaans rendition of the well-known French carol 'Angels We Have Heard on High' is set to debut on streaming platforms on December 12.

Centurion-based singer Frikkie van Biljon (39) is gearing up for the release of his fresh version of the cherished Christmas carol, “Herders op die ope Velde” (Shepherds in the Open Fields).

This Afrikaans rendition of the well-known French carol “Angels We Have Heard on High” is set to debut on streaming platforms on December 12.

Van Biljon, who was honoured with the 2023 Afri-Indie Award for Best Male Vocalist, described his latest interpretation as a blend of nostalgia and modern sound.

He said he took charge of both the vocals and production of the song while receiving loving contributions from his wife and four children.

“The collaboration with my family adds an extra layer of love and warmth, making it the perfect Christmas anthem,” he said.

The singer shared that it has become a tradition for his family to release a Christmas song every year or every other year.

“Last year we weren’t together as a family, so this year I thought it would be good to do something together,” he said.

He emphasised the joy of creating music as a family.

“While working with my younger children was challenging due to their lack of experience, it was ultimately rewarding.”

Van Biljon said his two older children prepared lines of the song with guidance from their mother, ensuring they were ready for the studio.

He believes the song beautifully captures the heavenly praises sung by angels at the announcement of Christ’s birth to the shepherds.

He explained that it is deeply rooted in Christmas tradition and symbolises the joy and peace that the holiday represents.

“I wanted to reimagine this carol in a way that respects its tradition while introducing something fresh and modern,” he said.

“Creating it with my family made it even more special because it’s something we deeply value.”

He further expressed the universal message of the song.

“No matter who you are, where you’re from, rich or poor, good news will always find you.”

Van Biljon is not the only talent in the household.

His daughter, Lisa, showcased her skills in The Sound of Music in 2024, while his son, Gideon, starred as Eric in the international production of Matilda in 2023 and 2024.

His previous musical works include “Huis”, “Elke Stukkie Kaap” and “Breek my hart oop”.

He said he draws significant inspiration from his family.

“Most of my music relates to what I learn from my kids or my wife.

“I also find inspiration in the meaning of things.”

He said one of his previous songs titled “Huis” was about what home means.

Van Biljon recalled that his first solo performance was at the age of five, and over the years, he has grown as a performer while participating in various music events.

“One of the defining moments of my career was overcoming imposter syndrome.

It’s a very fulfilling moment in a person’s life when they overcome that barrier and stay true to themselves,” he said.

Looking ahead, Van Biljon plans to release new music next year, possibly collaborating with local artists.
