Pretoria North police call on churches, business to tighten security this festive season

The police have provided guidelines to minimise the threat of crime and reduce the vulnerability of soft targets.

Pretoria North police have urged church leaders, businesses, and residents in the precinct to be extra cautious this festive season.

According to Pretoria North police spokesperson Sergeant Tumishang Moloto, this time of the year is notorious for increased criminal activity, and law enforcement is aiming to reduce the vulnerability of those regarded as soft targets.

Churches, a common target during this period, are urged to take precautions.

Moloto said they should avoid evening services or events, as criminals often exploit the cover of darkness.

“We encourage churches to reduce the use of cash during services, as cash transactions attract opportunistic criminals.

“One of the most effective deterrents is increased security, such as hiring armed response teams and installing alarm systems,” said Moloto.

He said another major concern is the vulnerability of parked vehicles during church services.

“They must organise patrollers to monitor parking spaces and safeguard vehicles while congregants are attending services.

“Ensuring that the parking areas are well-lit and patrolled can deter potential criminals from targeting churchgoers’ vehicles,” he said.

Businesses in Pretoria North are also urged to be vigilant during this period and the police have provided specific guidelines to help them minimise the threat of crime.

“Businesses must implement 24-hour security services to ensure their premises are constantly monitored and this may include physical security guards, alarm systems, and even surveillance cameras.

“Another critical measure for businesses is to control access to their premises and by ensuring that only authorised individuals can enter their property, businesses can reduce chances of break-ins or other security breaches.”

He said businesses should also close earlier than usual during the festive season to avoid being targeted in the late hours of the evening when criminal activity typically spikes.

In addition to warnings for churches and businesses, Pretoria North police have also provided safety tips for homeowners.

Residents are urged to secure their properties by ensuring that all gates, doors, and windows are locked before going to bed.

Moloto said many criminals take advantage of unlocked and poorly secured entry points.

He said homeowners should take steps to remove items that could attract criminals, such as bicycles, motorcycles, and gas bottles, as these are often left in open areas, making them easy targets for opportunistic thieves.

Moloto stressed the importance of reporting any suspicious activity in and around the community.

Residents are encouraged to use the MySAPS app or contact the local police station immediately if they notice anything unusual.

For immediate assistance, the SAPS Pretoria North Client Service Centre can be reached on 071 675 6319, which is free of charge from any cellphone.
