Centurion intersection hit with heavy flooding resulting in infrastructure damage

Residents in the area are urged to avoid the intersection of End and Rabie streets which is closed until further notice.

Reports of severe flooding at the intersection of End and Rabie streets in Centurion last night have surfaced on social media.

Images from Saturday morning (December 21) show significant damage to parts of the road, and a video on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) shows a car reportedly caught in the flooding.

More information about the incident is limited at this stage.

Ward 57 councillor, David Farquharson, confirmed that emergency services were called to rescue people in the flooded area on Friday night, December 20, saying, “The scene was terrible and one car was swept away.”

Although the situation is evolving, Farquharson reported that all affected areas are being reopened, except for the intersection of End and Rabie streets.

“We will monitor the situation throughout the day, as it’s expected to rain again,” he added.

Tshwane mayor, Nasiphi Moya, praised the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for their swift response.

Moya said in an X post, “Great work to our teams for their swift response to the Centurion floods.”

“However, we can’t just talk about infrastructure development – we need urgent action to prevent future disasters.”

The intersection has been prone to localised flooding in the past, especially during heavy rainfall which tends to happen at this time of year.

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level Four warning for disruptive rain in the coming days.

Residents are urged to exercise caution and follow safety measures:

– Stay indoors and away from metal objects during thunderstorms

– Avoid seeking shelter under trees or tall objects

– Refrain from crossing flooded roads, bridges, and swollen streams

– Be aware of potential hail, strong winds, heavy rain, and lightning accompanying thunderstorms

Tshwane EMS has yet to provide further comment on the flooding last night.
