How to keep your garden vibrant

Here are some tips to keep your garden thriving while you are away on holiday.

Ensuring the health and vitality of your garden requires extra attention, here are some tips to follow.

Resident Dikeledi Masipa shared her secret to a lush garden.

“I water my plants regularly and give them maintenance,” Masipa explained.

Masipa said a well-developed root system with natural phosphorus is crucial.

“I also use eggshells and a mixture of water, vinegar, brown sugar and baking soda to keep pests away.”

Soulbent project CEO, Luka Mashudu Makhado shared gardening tips to help locals keep their gardens thriving during the festive season:

Prepare for Hot Weather

Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Mulch your garden beds with organic material (like bark, grass clippings or straw) to retain moisture and keep the soil cool.

Festive Plant Choices

Plant colourful flowers like marigolds, petunias, and sunflowers to bring a cheerful vibe.

Consider hardy, drought-resistant plants such as succulents and indigenous plants, which require less water and maintenance.

Fertilise and Prune

Use compost or organic fertiliser to feed your plants and improve soil health.

Prune overgrown branches and remove dead plants to encourage new growth.

Grow Edible Plants

Start a small festive herb garden with basil, mint and coriander for holiday cooking.

Plant quick-growing vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and cherry tomatoes.

Decorate Naturally

Use potted plants, recycled containers or painted pots to create festive garden decorations.

Hang string lights or solar lights to make your garden cosy for evening gatherings.

Pest Control

Use eco-friendly pest repellents like garlic spray or neem oil to protect your plants.

Attract helpful insects like ladybugs to naturally control pests.

Water-Wise Practices

Use greywater for your garden where possible, ensuring it doesn’t contain harsh chemicals.

Instal a rainwater collection system to reduce water costs and save resources.

Engage the Family

Turn gardening into a festive activity by involving family and friends.

Encourage kids to plant seeds or create DIY decorations for the garden.

Makhado said gardening is a great way to relax and beautify your surroundings, but it’s important to stay safe.

He encourages locals to follow these tips to enjoy a productive and injury-free gardening season:
