Learners get new hairstyles for free before school opening day

A back to school campaign prepares schoolchildren to look clean and neat with new hairstyles and haircuts.

Mamelodi learners had the opportunity to choose their dream haircuts and plaiting styles before school opening day.

This came after the Voice It In Action organisation held a two day back-to-school campaign at Denlyn Mall in Mamelodi, preparing learners to come back to school looking clean and neat with new hairstyles and cuts.

Founder of the organisation, Kgotatso Moloto, said the campaign aimed to create innovative activities that will not only help children get new hairstyles but also get them ready for the school year by creating after school and holiday programmes in collaboration with Tshwane libraries and different organisations.

He said the campaign had lots of activities from changing hairstyles, haircuts, educational support programmes, sports, indigenous games, information stalls and entertainment.

“We have brought a holistic programme that is centred on children but can benefit the whole community,” said Moloto.

“The campaign is actually empowering everyone.”

He described the organisation as a non-profit company and public benefit organisation formed with the intention to curb the heightened violence in South Africa.

“We focus on Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and feticide (destruction/abortion of a fetus), domestic violence, human trafficking, rape, abuse, bullying and related ills/challenges,” said Moloto.

He said the organisation creates solutions to curb violence focusing on GBV.

“We are fighting GBV by educating and empowering young people by keeping them busy with education programmes and sports,” he said.

Moloto said the organisation wants to give young people the opportunity to be empowered so they can stand up for themselves and others.

He said the campaign was inspired by a member in the North West. “We want the hairstyle and cuts campaign everywhere across the country and influence South Africans to do this with us”.

The organisation invited different stakeholders, small businesses and organisations to take part in the campaign including the police, health, department of education, sports and CPF members.

“We want people to know that children can travel the world not only through education but with sports.”

Moloto added that more than 250 schoolchildren had the opportunity to change their hairstyles.

He concluded that this was not a once-off campaign, but that they are planning to host it annually and are inviting more stakeholders to come on board.
