Blind councillor ready to swim 25th consecutive Midmar Mile

Nortjé plans to raise R50 000 for the Prinshof School for the Visually Impaired in Pretoria Central.

Hentie Nortjé says he’s ready to raise money for a visually impaired school this February 8 as he is set to swim his 25th consecutive Midmar Mile.

The blind PR councillor for Ward 8, attorney at Malan and Nortjé Attorneys and long-distance swimmer has been raising money for schools, charities, churches, shelters and many more organisations throughout his years of competing in the mile.

The first charity he supported was Carel du Toit Centre for children with hearing disabilities.

This year, Nortjé plans to raise R50 000 for the Prinshof School for the Visually Impaired in Pretoria Central, a school he holds dear to his heart.

“The plight of the disabled in South Africa is very close to my heart. It is for this reason that I have decided to swim my 25th Midmar Mile to raise funds for Prinshof School for the Visually Impaired, where my own educational journey began,” Nortjé said.

The Midmar Mile is an annual swimming race held in February at Midmar Dam near Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

“Funds raised with this campaign will specifically be used to fund the school project to improve water safety and basic swimming skills for foundation phase learners,” Nortjé said.

The school is running the project in co-operation with an institution known as Kiddies Aqua.
