Local singer on the brink of music greatness
Centurion singer Charlize Berg’s early experiences have laid the foundation for her musical growth.

A 32-year-old local singer and songwriter is on the brink of a remarkable journey in the music industry.
Charlize Berg was born and raised in Centurion and discovered her deep love for music at a young age.
At 12 years old, she started to entertain the idea of pursuing her passion more seriously and was driven by a deep love for singing that she describes as a gift.
“This was at a time when I started receiving my first singing lessons from an incredible vocal coach,” she reflected.
“At the time, my vocal coach was giving lessons to university students, and I was very young with very much that I still needed to learn.”
Berg’s early experiences laid the foundation for her musical growth.
She released her first demo album at 13, which included some of her favourite songs and quickly gained recognition in the music industry.
“My demo album gained a lot of recognition in the music industry behind the scenes. A lot of artists also started to wonder who this new young girl was,” she said.
The pivotal moment in her career came at the age of 16 when she was recognised by two music labels, leading to her first record deal at 17 during her matric year in 2010.
“Since then, I started working really hard to make a name for myself.
“I’ve experienced a lot through the different journeys I went through,” Berg reflected.

Over the years, her dedication paid off as she received several nominations from the South African Music Awards, a recognition that she cherishes deeply.
Family support has been the cornerstone of Berg’s musical journey.
She said her parents were her greatest supporters, always driving her to meetings, interviews, and recordings to help her achieve her dreams.
“My family is still my greatest support and my greatest gift and the reason why I still make music.
“My husband and children inspire me creatively and cement the importance of family in my life.”
Growing up, Sundays were special for her as her father would play DVDs of artists like Freddie Mercury, Celine Dion, Andrea Bocelli and Sarah Brightman.
This exposed her to different genres and styles.
“I’m very thankful for that now as an artist, and I try and implement that with my children as well because it taught me a lot,” she said.
Berg said that some of her career milestones include collaborations with established artists in the Afrikaans music scene.
Her breakthrough moment occurred in 2012 with the duet “You and I” alongside singer Heinz Winckler, which helped her succeed in the next couple of years.
“The song did really well in the next coming years, and that’s what landed me the South African music award nominations.
“I received nominations for Best Artist, Best Album and Best Duet of the Year,” she said.

Among her most memorable performances was one of her first shows back in 2013, where she faced the challenge of performing in front of thousands of people.
“This was the time I realised the magnitude of what I was getting myself into, and I felt like a tiny ant on that stage.”
She said such experiences have shaped her artistry and her approach to music.
“Sometimes as an artist, you have to look deep within yourself and give people the most open and honest version of yourself,” she said.
Berg shared that her fans can expect new music from her soon, with songs in both Afrikaans and English.
“Beyond my musical endeavours, I enjoy watching emotionally resonant movies and conducting research into ancient history.
Spending time with my family is also very important to me,” she added.
For the future, Berg hopes to continue pursuing her passion for music while reaching even greater heights.
