Raygun the Baboon escapes darting, heads for Solomon Mahlangu Drive
The Owl Rescue team is carefully tracking his movements to ensure his safety.
Raygun, the famous baboon roaming Pretoria, has yet to be captured despite multiple attempts.
According to the Owl Rescue Centre, the latest sighting placed him in Faerie Glen, heading towards Solomon Mahlangu Drive.
Brendan Murray of the Owl Rescue Centre said they tried to dart him during the afternoon of February 1 but were unsuccessful.
“We tried to dart him but the dart didn’t take him down. He’s now in Faerie Glen and is about to cross the Solomon Mahlangu Drive,” said Murray.
He said residents must remain calm and not try to intimidate the baboon when they see him, as officials are working on getting him to a safe area.
Authorities are still working to safely capture Raygun to prevent any harm to both him and residents.
“We closely tracking him, and we are asking the public to help by reporting any sightings. If he’s smart and sticks with the green belts, he will be well on his way to another baboon troop near Bronkhorstspruit by the weekend.”
Murray explained that Raygun poses no danger to anyone; he’s simply trying to get to his new home peacefully.
“There are a lot of risks involved. He can cover two to three kilometres before the drugs kick in, and during that time, he may cross over buildings, which can make it difficult to track him.”
Murray said when baboons start feeling drowsy, they tend to climb, explaining, “So if there is a ten-story building, he will go up and you don’t want to be on the roof of a ten-story building when you are all drugged up. So if it is safe to do, we will dart him. But if it’s safe, we will dart him.”
