Decomposed body found in a river in Silverton
An inquest has been opened after the Silverton police found a decomposed body floating in the river.
A decomposed body of a man was found floating in the river in Silverton next to the Blue Bridge on the corner of Van Wyk Street and Granite Cresent.
According to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk, police was notified of the floating body by a member of the local CPF on Saturday.
He said the Silverton police responded to the scene.
“Upon arrival, police discovered the decomposed body of an unknown man floating in the river and an inquest has been opened. Silverton SAPS is investigating the cause.”
A community patroller Marietjie van Deventer said that on Saturday around 10:00, a CPF member spotted the body while on the Blue Bridge.
She said it could be that the body was underneath the water deep down for a few days and only came to the surface Saturday.
“We are busy searching video material starting from 10 days ago just to establish how the body got into the river.”
Van Deventer said she has lived in the area for 50 years and “crime has increased, drugs are a problem as well as break-ins”.
She said people use the spot where the body was found to perform rituals.
“Dead animals are dropped in the river as well. The water is contaminated. People still do illegal fishing in the river. How can you eat fish if you are not aware of what is going on underneath the water like for instance this incident?”
In a separate incident, the body of a missing woman was found hanging from a tree in the Groenkloof Nature Reserve on January 29.
The woman was reported missing at the Brooklyn police station but police have not revealed her identity.
According to Van Dyk, security guards at Groenkloof Nature Reserve reported that she had asked them if she could go in to take photographs.
“They granted her entry, then became suspicious as her car was parked in the reserve for some time. When they approached, they found it was locked and nobody was inside.”
Tshwane Metro Police were contacted to help identify the owner of the vehicle using the registration number.
“A search was conducted in the reserve when they came upon the scene.”
