Raygun finds his way back to the wild

Raygun, the famous baboon, has safely returned to the wild with the help of a dedicated community and tracking team.

Raygun, the now-famous baboon who captured the hearts of many, is finally home in the wild where he belongs, thanks to the collective efforts of an entire community.

After days of tracking and public participation, this determined baboon has made it back to his natural habitat.

The story of Raygun’s journey began about eight days ago when he was spotted roaming through the streets of Pretoria, causing concern among locals who weren’t sure what to do.

But with the help of the Owl Rescue Centre, including countless WhatsApp messages and phone calls from concerned residents, Raygun was located and safely tracked through various parts of the city.

One of the Owl Rescue Centre founders, Brendan Murray, tracked Raygun and made sure to update the public on his whereabouts.

Most recently, Raygun was found near the Zwavelpoort valley, east of Pretoria, where he spent the night safely perched in a high spot.

The tracking team monitored his movements, and as the journey progressed, Raygun made his way through areas like Silverton heading east with the hope that he would stick to the green belts, which would guide him to a new baboon troop near Bronkhorstspruit.

Throughout the operation, Murray emphasized that Raygun posed no threat to anyone, as he was merely trying to find his way to a new home in peace.

Reports of Raygun attacking and injuring dogs in some parts of Pretoria East could not yet be confirmed.

On Wednesday, Murray made a final update about Raygun, confirming that he is finally home in the wild.

“Thanks for all the help, guys; we received 726 WhatsApp messages and 168 calls today about his whereabouts. All the awareness that is created through public participation on all the different groups providing updates is great for baboon conservation, Murray posted earlier.”
