Here are the highest water-consuming areas in Tshwane threatened with stringent restrictions
Tshwane metro has announced its highest water-consuming areas and urged residents to change their current consumption practices.
Several suburbs in the Tshwane metro have been fingered as high water-consumers recently and are likely to experience prolonged water supply interruptions due to excessive demand.
On February 16, the Tshwane metro announced its highest water-consuming areas and threatened stricter restrictions if their water patterns did not change drastically soon.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the demand in these areas exceeded available supply, causing reservoir levels to drop significantly.
He said this has put the city’s distribution network and Rand Water systems under severe pressure.
“It is against this background that customers are warned that, if the current consumption practice does not change, they will encounter serious water shortages,” said Mashigo.
“If the consumption pattern does not change, Rand Water will instruct Tshwane to implement more stringent Level 2 restrictions, which have cost implications for the consumers.”

Mashigo reminded residents the water level 1 restrictions imposed previously in line with the Water Supply By-Laws, were never withdrawn and are therefore still applicable.
Residents are urge to follow the following specific water restrictions:
• No watering or irrigation of gardens with a hosepipe or sprinkler system between 06:00 and 18:00.
• No using of a hosepipe to clean driveways or patios.
• No washing of vehicles with a hosepipe.
• No filling or top up of swimming pools or water features.
The metro urges all residents to make a concerted effort in decreasing the water usage by adhering to the water restrictions.
“Punitive measures will be imposed against transgressors.”
The announcement of high water consumers comes as Rand Water in a media statement last week called on customers, such as Tshwane and Johannesburg to reduce consumption and avoid system collapse.
It said a collapse could inevitably affect other customers as well.
“The water systems are interlinked and high consumption in one area impacts on the sustainable provision in other areas. Water conservation is a joint responsibility that must be observed and practiced by ALL to ensure sustainable and equitable supply and provision.”
Rand Water said its systems were dropping fast as a result of extremely high water consumption from customers, the cities of Johannesburg and Tshwane.
“Rand Water continues to supply at maximum capacity; however, the storage is declining rapidly owing to high-water consumption,” read the statement.
