Save lives by donating blood this Easter
Donors are invited to come and donate blood to meet the demand of more than 3 000 units of blood a day.
The South African Blood Service is calling on Pretoria residents to donate blood to meet demand for the upcoming Easter holidays.
Donor relations practitioner Oscar Ramutsheli said there is demand for more than 3 000 units of blood needed on a daily basis.
“We need 3 500 units of blood daily just to meet the current demand, with only 1% of the population donating.
“We need more people to come through and donate blood so that we can have enough to meet our daily demand.”
He said the blood drives make a huge difference because they become a family and community activity, driven by the community influencing each other.
“We do not have sufficient blood stock, however, we are also not in crisis mode and with more people coming through to donate, we can get to save more South African lives.”
SANBS encourages the residents of Pretoria to donate blood during Easter weekend.
Requirements to donate blood:
– Aged 16 – 75
– Weigh at least 50kg
– General good health
– Eat within 4hrs of donating blood
– Lead a sexually safe lifestyle
– Consider your blood safe to transfuse to a patient.
SANBS has nine blood centres in Pretoria.
Residents who are interested in becoming blood donors are encouraged to visit the following centres:

– Wonderpark Donor Centre – Shop 554, Wonderpark Shopping Centre, Cnr Heinrich Ave and Brits Road, Karen Park
– Quagga Donor Centre – Quagga Mall, 12 Quagga Rd, Pretoria West
– Kolonnade Donor Centre – Shop 30, upper level, Kolonnade Shopping Centre
– Sammy Marks Donor Centre, 1st floor, Sammy Marks Square, Cnr Madiba and Lilian Ngoyi streets
– Hatfield Donor Centre – Hatfield Plaza, 1122 Burnett St, Hatfield
– Atterbury Donor Centre – Atterbury Value Mart, Shop 5, 2nd floor, 2001 Atterbury Road
