Planned power shutdown happening in Soshanguve
Technicians are replacing aged infrastructure at the IA Substation.
Residents of Soshanguve in the north of Pretoria living within the IA Substation supply area are experiencing power interruptions on Friday.
It is not an outage, but upgrades are being conducted at the substation.
Technicians are replacing aged equipment at the substation to enhance electricity supply quality to the community.
The shutdown is taking place between 08:00 and 17:00 on both days, affecting multiple blocks in Soshanguve.
Block BB and DD, along with the Soshanguve SPS line (Tswaing), are being impacted today. On Friday, the areas that will be affected are Blocks FF, GG, NN, IA, HH, LL, LL Ext, PP, and GG, along with parts of Winterveldt.
Spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the metro apologised for the inconvenience and advised residents to treat all electrical points as live during the shutdown.
Residents are urged to plan accordingly as the scheduled maintenance will help reduce future outages and ensure safer, more efficient power distribution in the long run.
The metro has also commenced a critical two-week project aimed at stabilising the power supply in Soshanguve by upgrading the IA Substation.
Tshwane Mayor dr Nasiphi Moya said this project is a step forward in resolving the electricity issues that have plagued residents in the area for years due to ageing infrastructure.
The IA Substation, which has been in operation for over five decades, is the primary cause of these problems.
Given its age, the infrastructure has long exceeded its intended lifespan, leading to frequent outages and an inability to meet the growing electricity demand.
The upgrades, which are currently 85% complete, are set to bring much-needed relief to the affected areas by replacing non-functioning switchgears and cables.
Moya said the substation has, over the years, struggled to handle the increasing electricity demand, necessitating load reductions to maintain system stability.
