Holiday programme for children in Mamelodi
The centre will keep children safe from the streets while their parents are working.
Mamelodi children will be kept busy with sports, art, singing and fun activities for the next two weeks.
They will be under the watchful eye of the organisers of Thandanani Drop Inn Centre for the school holidays, which runs from March 31 to April 8.
Ntombizodwa Mhlanga from Thandanani Drop Inn Centre said the holiday programme is aimed at keeping children safe from the street while their parents are at work.
“We have a line-up of exciting programmes which keep them busy the whole day from 10:00 to 15:00.
The children have breakfast in the morning and they later have a full meal for lunch,” said Mhlanga.
She said the activities are aimed at removing children from the streets and danger during the school holidays.
“I the children are not attended to or have someone to look after them, they are exposed to drugs, crimes, sexual activities and alcohol.
“The programme caters to learners from the age of five and upwards,” Mhlanga.
Mhlanga said parents need to register their children in the morning and the centre will take care of the children the whole day while their parents are at work.
“The centre will give the children breakfast and also make sure they have a freshly cooked meal before going back to their loved ones.”
The centre has teamed up with local stakeholders for the ongoing school holidays and games that keep children busy the whole day with lots of activities like board games, swimming, and playing.
Kate Kekana from the centre added that the centre has a regular afternoon school programme, but the numbers have increased with parents bringing their children during the school holidays.
“The programme is aimed at looking after the children, helping them with school work and feeding them for free while their parents are still at work.”
Parents are also expected to sign children in on a registration form in the morning and out when they fetch them in the afternoon.
Kekana said the centre ensures the safety of children by working together with Mamelodi East CPF to keep children safe and monitoring the situation.
There will be trips for children to visit heritage sites, museums and the botanical garden.
The centre is situated next to Lehlabile community hall in Section SNS in Mamelodi East.
