Five illegal immigrants, employer arrested in Pretoria

The by-law operation targeted business compliance and public safety.

The Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) alongside the Health and Community Safety departments have remained steadfast in their enforcement of by-law operations in Mabopane and Mamelodi.

The stakeholders clamped down on non-compliant businesses on April 8.

TMPD spokesperson Isaac Mahamba said metro police conducted a successful operation verifying the compliance of supermarkets.

“Five undocumented immigrants were arrested [and] one person was arrested for employing immigrants,” he said.

He said health and fire inspectors issued several infringement fines.

“Three supermarkets were closed for non-compliance with fire brigade regulations,” said Mahamba.

In addition, he said another business compliance operation was conducted in Nellmapius.

“The operation was successfully conducted, five spaza shops were visited and inspected for business compliance.”

He said 11 Section 56 infringement notices were issued to businesses that did not comply, and goods were confiscated.

Mahamba said these operations play a crucial role in clamping down on businesses selling counterfeit and expired goods to secure the safety of the community. He added that these operations would be conducted daily.

According to the Consumer Protection Act (CPA), businesses selling counterfeit or expired goods are liable to fines and closure, as these goods pose a significant risk to public health.
