Queenswood easter egg hunt draws over 300 kids

Family and friends came together in celebrations of the Easter period as more than 300 children took part in the fifth annual Queenswood Easter Egg Hunt on Sunday.

The event was hosted by Angelyne Purchase on the corner of Stead and Carter avenues.

The egg hunt, which has become a staple on the local calendar, was supported by Brinant Security, Kilnerpark Security, Axon Security, SAPS, and dedicated community members.

The host said the idea was born shortly after Covid-19 lockdown regulations were lifted, as a way to bring back some joy to the neighbourhood.

“We started with just 24 kids, and their parents brought along Easter eggs. It was small, but meaningful,” she said.

Five years later, the event has grown into a large-scale community celebration, welcoming hundreds of excited children and their families.

“Now we have over 300 kids, and it’s completely free,” said Purchase.

“This has really become a heartwarming day for the whole community.”

Purchase added that the Easter Egg Hunt not only offers fun for the little ones but also promotes community spirit and safety through collaboration with local security companies and law enforcement.

Police officers were present on the day to ensure everything ran smoothly, while volunteers helped manage the crowd and activities.

Purchase said she is incredibly grateful for the support from local businesses and neighbours who come together each year to keep the tradition alive.

“It’s about creating memories and giving the kids something special to look forward to,” she said.
