Criminals targeting motorbikes in Pretoria North
Many of these thefts occur in the early hours of the morning when residents are asleep.
The Pretoria North police have issued a stern warning to residents following a spike in motorbike thefts in April.
According to social crime prevention co-ordinator Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, several cases have been reported in the past few weeks, with a clear pattern emerging.
Moloto said most of the motorbikes were stolen from residential premises, often left parked outside and unattended.
“We are urging the community to be extra vigilant.
“Thieves are taking advantage of motorbikes left in open areas, driveways, and carports with no security,” said Moloto.
Moloto believes opportunistic criminals are targeting motorbikes due to their resale value and ease of transportation.
He said some are dismantled and sold for parts, while others are trafficked to different regions.
Many of these thefts occur in the early hours of the morning when residents are asleep.
Pretoria North residents are now being encouraged to take extra precautions.
Moloto recommended parking motorbikes inside locked garages or behind secured gates and installing alarms or wheel locks if possible.
“Surveillance cameras and motion-sensor lighting can also act as deterrents.
“Residents must also remove valuables from plain sight, both in homes and vehicles, as visible items often attract criminal elements,” said Moloto.
He said the police are gathering intelligence and working closely with the community policing forums to identify hotspots and suspected syndicates involved in the thefts.

“We rely on the community’s eyes and ears. Even the smallest tip-off can help us break these cases and prevent further losses,” said Moloto.
