Residents blamed for recurring sewer blockages in Camellia Avenue
Despite recent repairs, residents in Pretoria east, report ongoing sewer spillages in Camellia Avenue, while Tshwane attributes the issue to improper waste disposal practices.
Residents of Camellia Avenue and Brenda Road in Pretoria east are frustrated over the persistent sewer spillages that continue to affect their community.
Despite recent repair efforts by the Tshwane metro, the issue remains unresolved, leading to concerns about public health and infrastructure maintenance.
Helen Alpino highlighted the severity of the situation.
“The smell is not good for our health, and the dirt that is coming out of the system pollutes the environment.
“We reported the recent sewage spillage, but nothing has been done.”
Alpino said the recent spillage occurred right after the metro was done unblocking the system.
She hopes the city can find a permanent resolution to the recurring sewer issues in their community.
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo confirmed that the metro is aware of the frequent sewer blockages in the area and that inspections have been conducted.
Mashigo also confirmed that the metro unblocked the blockage on April 24.
“We have inspected the sewage infrastructure in the area, and it is still in good condition.”
He said regular maintenance is being conducted to prevent frequent blockages.
However, Mashigo attributed the recurring spillages to residents disposing of foreign objects into the sewer line.
“Community members throwing foreign objects into the sewer lines and connecting gutters to the system are some of the main contributors to the crisis.
He urged residents to refrain from disposing of foreign objects and non-degradable materials into the sewer system.
Mashigo said the metro has implemented a special team from the Water and Sanitation Unit for regular maintenance in the area, monitoring the situation every second day.
“Additionally, Tshwane is undertaking a broader plan to upgrade ageing water and sanitation infrastructure throughout Pretoria east to mitigate such issues in the long term.”
